Trash Free Tuesdays A base weighing of lunch trash at the CYC on September 16th resulted in only 1.25 pounds of trash. After a promotion with flyers featuring students and emails to families Trash Free Tuesday resumed on September 23rd with. The kindergarten class weighed the trash and found only a fourth of a pound of trash for the entire school! The following few weeks were not quite as low but the results were below 1 pound which is phenomenal for a school of 100 children and many adults.

Global Hand Washing Day
October 15, 2014 was Global Hand Washing Day. To celebrate, Dr. Lis Maring and Kelly Blake from the School of Public Health, and a group of Global Public Health Scholars at UMCP visited the Blue Room kindergarten children to do educational hand washing activities. Afterwards they created a giant banner to help remind others of the importance of hand washing. One child remarked, "They shined a light and it showed germs, when we washed our hands right the germs went away, then we made a poster about hand washing". See the video. Hand washing with soap is the most effective way to prevent diarrheal and acute respiratory infections. See the Global Handwashing website. |
Dr. Steven Cohan and the Come Alive Outside Program- Dr Steven Cohan began working with the CYC and the Kindergarten children on a new design for the playground along with the Come Alive Outside Program. The kindergarten children started a playground and nature study to go along with this. They visited different playgrounds in the vicinity and took notes on the equipment and vegetation surrounding the playgrounds. They are also helping Dr. Cohan come up with ideas. See the UMD article.
